The Short Answer
Camps Bay is better for restaurants, sunset drinks, and people-watching. Clifton is better for swimming, sheltered coves, quieter days, and families.
But here's the truth: you don't have to choose. They're five minutes apart. You can do both in a single day — and you should.
Insider Tip
Start your morning at Clifton 4th for a quiet swim. Afternoon lunch on the Camps Bay strip. Sundowners watching the sun drop into the Atlantic. That's the real Cape Town beach day.
Camps Bay Beach
Palm-lined promenade, beach bars, fine dining, and some of the best sunsets in the Southern Hemisphere. Camps Bay is Cape Town's most iconic beach — and it knows it.
The Beach
1.5 km of white sand facing west. The sunsets are unmatched — think orange, pink, and purple spilling across the Atlantic while you sip something cold. The water is the Atlantic, so it's cold. Very cold. But that's not really the point here.
Pros & Cons
- Pros: World-class restaurant strip, amazing sunsets, lively atmosphere, great for sundowners, fully walkable
- Cons: Windy, cold water, crowded in peak season, parking can be tricky
Best For
- Sundowners with a view
- People-watching and photography
- After-beach dining
- Instagram moments
Clifton Beach
Four sheltered coves, turquoise water, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Clifton is the beach you go to when you actually want to be on the beach — swim, bodyboard, read a book in the sand.
The Four Beaches
- 1st Beach: Popular, volleyball, great for meeting people
- 2nd Beach: Known as the gay-friendly beach, vibrant community
- 3rd Beach: Quieter, more relaxed, beautiful setting
- 4th Beach: The family beach — calmest water, most sheltered, lifeguards in summer
Pros & Cons
- Pros: Sheltered from wind, warmer water than Camps Bay, calmer, stunning scenery, less crowded
- Cons: No restaurants on the beach, parking nightmare, lots of stairs, no sunset views, no lifeguards in winter
Best For
- Swimming and bodyboarding
- Families with kids
- Quieter beach days
- Photography and scenery
